The work was performed for the cardinal Benedetto Giustiniani, in competition with a painting of a similar subject painted by Caravaggio for the brother of the cardinal, the Marquis Vincenzo.
The canvas documents the period of greatest adhesion of Giovanni Bagione to the Caravaggio style, both for the close-up point of view, both for the black background and the direct light that creates violent chiaroscuro contrasts. The trial of 1603, in which Caravaggio was accused of defamation against the painter, abruptly put an end to this approach and the Roman painter returned in the footsteps of a weary late mannerism.
To this traumatic rupture we owe the legend that in the face of the landed demon we must recognize the features of Caravaggio. The subject is a variation on the theme of the virgilian Omnia vincit Amor, who knew a vast fortune in the seventeenth century.
Printed on KI Picasso Canvas 350gsm and hand embellished.
Signed, numbered, and delivered with a certificate of authenticity.
