Portrait of Amalia Rodrigues, who is Portugal’s most famous fado singer.◾She was the largest of Portugal’s fado singers of the twentieth century. It is known as “Queen of Fado” being the Portuguese artistic figure, known and influential beyond the borders of Portugal through her many international activities, including TV and movies.
Amália syncretize the art of what is urban and rural, which is popular and learned through a unique timbre, full of sensual and musical emotion.
Most importantly Amália put fado as a musical genre on the map of world music, in dictionaries, libraries and musical essays. She paved the way for the generations that would follow, and that continue her legacy.
