I met Almin in 2022 as he captained the small wooden boat that took me to the remote islands of Northern Bangladesh.
I remember looking at the beauty of these fragile islands and at the same time realised that Almin was watching my reaction. I could sense his pride and a defiance as he struggled to moor the boat in the sweltering sun as sweat poured down his face. I could sense the power of this pride, defiance and hope and I knew instantly that these were the emotional foundations that the villagers needed to get through a life of hardship, a life that they lived with joy and happiness. I was so proud and honoured to be in the presence of such people.
I painted Almin in a realism style trying to focus on the struggle, effort and defiance on his face.
