Here you can see a macro photo of a Cladonia Stellaris lichen with a raindrop in it that was captured in the forest of Sweden in 2021.
The photo "Alien" belongs to the series "Alien", which is dedicated to lichens and their wonderful qualities.
On the photo, the lichens with the raindrop look like a cosmonaut in the space helmet, and it highlights the scientific experiment when lichens survived unprotected in the 2-week experiment in open space in 2005. The amazing results of the experiment added weight to the theory of panspermia, according to which life can be transported between planets, as well as to the intriguing story of lichens, whose origins remain unclean.
The "Alien" collection represents lichens as aliens, underscoring the fact that they are still pretty unknown, often unseen by people. The surrealistic photos of the collection illustrate the history of lichens, which is so intriguing that it can make us suppose that they could come to us from the open space!
And at the same time, these odd little lichens remain trailblazers and early colonisers—the first to settle on bare surfaces to prepare the space for the next species. From this side, they are still aliens—pioneers in a new land!
I think they should be known!
🏆 The "Alien collection" brought me to the final of the Arte Laguna Prize 16 and my artwork "Inside the Drop" was showcased at the finalists' exhibition at the Arsenale of Venice from March 11 to April 16, 2023.
