Original artwork description:

Alchemy is one of three studies of the Gunnera Gigantica leaf, the others being 'Fossilised' and 'Desiccated'. All three leaves were harvested from a garden in Exmoor. Each study uses a different preservation techniques to conserve the organic matter. These different techniques are fundamental in bestowing each leaf with its own aesthetic aspect.

The Gunnera Gigantica has the largest leaves of any plant in the United Kingdom. It originated in the Triassic period which gives it its prehistoric look and it is the largest herb in the world.

Once harvested the leaf quickly wilts and shrivels and the challenge is to preserve its original structure with continuous hydration. The structure of the leaf is then reinforced with fibreglass and resin before being carefully gilded with 24 carat gold leaf.

This work comes with a built-in armature so it can either be mounted on a plinth or hung on a wall.

Materials used:

Gunnera Gigantica Leaf, Fibreglass, Resin, Gold Leaf
