About the sitters; Michael Kuczynski came to Pembroke in 1959 as an undergraduate. In 1972 he returned from working in the IMF and elsewhere to teach economics. Since then, he has befriended and mentored generations of students, whatever their academic field. For many Pembroke alumni all over the world, he is their closest link to the College.
Roger Tomkys was Master of Pembroke from 1992 to 2004 after a career in the Diplomatic Service, spending much of his time dealing with the Middle East. Three decades living in Cambridge have not completely erased the marks left by four years as an undergraduate Classicist in The Other Place.
Having black coffee and macarons while sketching at Fitzbillies is how this collection was born. Wondering about the people at other tables, their laughter, coy glances and ice-tea with two straws.
Fitzbillies is quintessentially Cambridge and everyone you meet will have their own story. Whether it’s afternoon tea meeting future parents-in-law or a 20-year old memory of Chelsea buns with your grandad after school, Fitzbillies has a place in the hearts of everyone who knows it. This exhibition is about capturing the inimitable character of Fitzbillies, its patrons, its staff and its bakers. In short, these paintings are here to celebrate life at Fitzbillies.
