Artwork description:

Walking my dog along the beach at Wiseman’s Bridge the sun was just breaking through the cloud to the south.

It is one of an unintended series of three prints. The initial sketches were made the day before the first COVID-19 lockdown in Wales and were very different. Their development presented many problems until I came to realise that these prints had become entangled with my emotional responses to the pandemic. I then saw the works as a series - depicting the calm after the storm - and reflective of my hopes for a return to normality promised by the development of vaccines. They can also be seen to represent the ‘breathing space’ the pandemic has provided for the environment.

The large areas of grey reflect that for many this ‘normality’ will be filled with loss and pain.

This is a reduction linocut, where the block is successively printed and recut, inked and printed for each layer - a process which results in its gradual destruction.
