Swallows
"I saw the swallows as they took their leave,
I saw them flying in the last farewell,
rise to the compass of the migrant winds
and start their journey to the southern lands.
I saw the swallows say a new goodbye
take one last dive down to the singing stream,
shoot their dark arrows in the harvest sky
to find their poise and test their cruising speed.
I saw the swallows like I saw my life,
the airy dancing of a fleeting form,
a constant movement in the timeless light
whose changing patterns spell its own return.
The river rushes past the placid towns
and from dark oceans finds its ancient source
upon the mountains so it can run down
the same old channels through the winding slopes.
There have been passions that we’ve all have known
and days when nothing but the truth shown through,
while time traced circles with its tethered thought
to bind desire to the old and new.
But now these swallows leave their nests behind
impelled by reasons in their timid souls,
by knowing seasons that instruct their flights
that life in freedom is its own sweet goal.
There’s no attachment, just the needful art
of things and nothing, of the full and void,
the steady balance of the mindful heart
on the high wire of the true and whole.
The swallows venture on their destined way
and their departure leaves an absent sound,
a fading echo of their fitful grace,
a silent scream in its Autumnal shroud.
The wise have spoken of the need to die,
of inward anchors and of letting go,
of being nothing as the end of strife
and living daily beyond grief and hope.
I saw the swallows and I went with them
while still remaining in my warm abode,
for all is flying to its appointed end
and now is always the only time to love..."
