This latest canvas painting is a continuation of my experiments in colourful abstract art. In the year 2023 I completed three abstract paintings on circular canvases, an exercise which took me out of my comfort zone and resulted in some eye-catching new work. For this latest abstract piece I've returned to a classic square canvas, instead opting to keep the circular forms within that framework.
I've also recently obtained the means to create dot patterns in acrylic paint using stencils, much like my pop art hero Roy Lichtenstein. However, I've decided to use the dots to create clashing and complimentary patterns - circles within circles - closer in style to the Japanese artist Yahoo Kusama or the Memphis Group, an Italian collective who in the 1980s experimented with bold colours and shapes, throwing away the old traditions of design.
One final inspiration is the music and artwork of the indie band Stereolab, a favourite of mine since my teen years, and whose album Dots and Loops has always inspired thoughts of abstract art in my mind.
While on the whole this is a more experimental piece for me, I feel that the bold 'pop' style colour palette of blues, pinks and yellows keeps it in line with my usual graphic style, rather than the more organic approach of classic abstract modern art.
The end result is a bold and bright piece of art that would brighten up any room in your home.
It is painted in acrylic paints on canvas and is signed on the back frame. There's a picture of me holding the painting to give you an idea of its relative size.
