I'm not going to sing a hymn to socks, although they certainly deserve it. Socks are not just an afterthought here. They're more than that. Socks act here as an independent, main character of the story.
How about that?
I'm sure they have a story to tell. You can see that these socks were not bought yesterday. They've lived a long and stormy life. They've served their owner faithfully. They have a great deal of sympathy for each other. Otherwise, how else can you explain that they are washed and dried personally, and not in a number of different accessories?
It's a joke, of course, but there's some common sense in it.
