I'm sure they have a story to tell. You can see that these socks were not bought yesterday. They've lived a long and stormy life. They've served their owner faithfully. They have a great deal of sympathy for each other. Otherwise, how else can you explain that they are washed and dried personally, and not in a number of different accessories?
It's a joke, of course, but there's some common sense in it.
