The village of Abinger Hammer in the Surrey Hills used to be an industrial village, one of the iron villages of the old Weald. Today it is tranquil and picturesque. It took its name from the nearby hammer pond, which, in the c17 and c18 centuries, drove a huge hammer for forging hot iron into shape.
