I have always been intrigued by Victoria Street, since childhood. A sharp rise or giddy descent depending on your view, it connects Grassmarket, the site of the old gallows, with the high point of Edinburgh's old town, with its ancient parliament and High Court. I was taken here as a boy, for tea and buttery scones in tea shops long since gone. Memories of pipe tobacco smoke and the heady; sickly sweet scents from the hops and breweries on the way to the castle. Memories of delicious cool shade, and of slipping on ice. A place of ghosts perhaps. The brightly coloured shops add a touch of Bohemia. A wonderful souvenir of Edinburgh, a great gift and a fantastic collection starter.
