One reason I love plein air is you never know what will show up when setting out to paint. I went to a local municipal park, expecting to paint trees and water. To my surprise and delight, this showy, stately gentleman and his sparring partner, another rooster, came strutting from the foliage, eyeing me with unabashed curiosity and warming themselves in morning sunshine. Several passersby asked me if I would paint them. Thus, the tree and scenery idea gave way to a rooster painting. One man dubbed me The Chicken Whisperer, informing me this pair of roosters was a shy duo, seldom appearing in public. We decided they were parading about in hopes of a portrait painting. I'm happy to grant their wish.
This painting began en plein air and finished in my studio. Painted boldly with brush and palette knife, including expressive impasto strokes emphasizing the love of life these ostentatious birds unwittingly present.
Graham oil paints, palette knife, canvas, brush work
