I did this painting during a period of experimentation. Most of my earlier pieces are monochrome or earthy colours with subjects grounded very much in reality. Although I do still paint this way at times more recently my work has become highly colourful and my subjects more fantastical. I feel that this painting was quite literally somewhere in between the two! I also liked the idea of the sky and water merging almost into one and of it being neither quite obviously day or night. As a philosophical symbol of tranquility and solitude I felt the heron fitted in perfectly with this serene and spiritual composition.
