A Kind of Magic is a large oil on canvas painting of an exuberant river landscape with a kingfisher bird that celebrates the beauty of summer 2020 in Sussex. The river emerges from the dark on the left where a curtain of trees cast shadows into the water in rich blues, greens and purples. Then it flows off into the sunlight and around a bend where you can see a meadow and low hill in the background. An abundance of wild flowers are in the foreground where they seem to be communicating with the kingfisher who is dispensing magic. This is another in a series of river walk inspired paintings that reflect the fun I had during the summer walking along the banks of the Rivers, Ouse, Cuck, Medway and Rother in Sussex. I saw two kingfishers and because it was magic for me, I tried to instil this sense of the wonder of nature into this painting. It was especially poignant as nature was thriving despite the troubles of mankind at that time and it was very heartening to see that. The build-up of different layers of paint make it a little art nouveau and mysterious.
