At a street corner, in Hull, I pause to admire a building. Hull's buildings have fascinated me all my life, wonderful Victorian edifices with a roughness, an edge, a pedigree of history and neglect. The decay is visceral, exposing parts of the buildings; rafters protrude, bricks show their nakedness, the thin veneer of stucco eroded. It feels timeless too, a Proustian return to early childhood when Hull was the big city at the edge of my infantile universe. The building here is of red brick, a solidity and self assurance in its corner. Ghost signs protrude through the paint, old advertising flutters. I have used some collage here to add atmosphere. The work is on a 0.4 deep canvas and can therefore hang without a frame if wished.
