9-11 had such a huge impact on me personally, as it did on all Americans who witnessed that day. I was unable to paint about it for a long time. You need time to try to make sense of the enormity of it, to gain some psychological and emotional distance from the sheer scale of it, before you can begin to distill so many images, memories, thoughts and emotions into the language of art. I offer this painting to my fellow Americans, as we continue to carry that day and its aftermath within us, as we go on being Americans--focusing on all that unites us, rather than lesser differences of opinion. We remember and still grieve those we lost, and their memory steels us with the resolve to never forget and to make our own lives count. This painting has been given a satin varnish for long life and protection, and hanging hardware is already installed.
