4-1-19 ceremony is a large scale female Geisha study on canvas in oils using a muted palette contrasting with areas of vibrant colour. The work is painted with a fluid application of paint, staining and stripping back to allow areas of raw canvas to be visible. The work is a continuation in my interest in the notion of change and impermanence. We are exposed to countless images of manipulated perfection of the human form. This work is a counterbalance to this through the process of making the work and the resulting uneven surface textures and blotches of paint from earlier layers. Creating imperfect or flawed beauty.
