I love the Victorian indoor Market in Cardiff with it's steel fixtures, supports and arches, the huge glass, sky lit, two-tone ceiling. The colours are reminiscent of Victorian colours which create a heady swirl for me. They are larger than life, fantastic in some ways. Elevate the imagination almost as it surveys the bustle of the stalls below. I thought about making this painting realistic with lines and details carefully drawn and pronounced but suddenly decided that would take the life out of it, tie the image down too much and not let the painting breathe. I have instead tried to interpret the vibrancy of the place in blobs of bright colour, orangey yellow and jadey blues complemented with muted but tasteful browns all held in place by wrought iron black Victorian lines. It is seriously, functionally substantial but busily bright and light too. This is the frisson I have attempted to catch. As a result this translates into a sense of sturdy movement and the painting strangely reminds me of a Victorian train station with the stall tops like great trains ready for further activity.
