Our community of artists is the core foundation of Artfinder. With such a vast community based in all corners of the world, we wanted to help them share more about their artist journey, their artistic process and technique and what inspires them. Today, we chat with one of our amazing painters, Novi Lim.
Can you introduce yourself, where you are from and how long you have been with Artfinder for?
My name is Novi Lim, I am an Indonesian born artist based in United states. I have been on Artfinder since November 2020.
Can you tell us a little bit about this collection and your inspiration for this work?
The beauty of nature, birds, and botanicals are the inspiration behind my collection. I grew up in a densely populated, concrete jungle in Java with very little access to fresh air, grass, or open spaces. I love animals, and one of my favourite things is to be outside and walk my dog. I constantly long to be around greeneries, away from the crowd. Only when I moved to North Carolina was I surrounded by an abundance of nature, which sparks my creativity. All of my abstract paintings are the intuitive outcome of my desire and are created without following any set plan.
In just a short sentence, how would you describe/summarise your work?
Finding and encapsulating the spirit and subtleties of the natural world is what interests me. In my process, I let the freedom of movement take shape — with soft curves, edges, and swiping brushstrokes, drawing inspiration from forms that resemble aquatic, avian, and botanical forms.
What does your creative process involve?
Since I enjoy freedom, abstraction allows me to express myself in the most genuine way possible.
What’s your favourite artwork you created and why?
The latest one I completed is usually always my favourite.
What do you think is the role of art/artists in society?
Art is an oasis for the soul.
What advice do you have for emerging artists looking to make a living out of their art career?
Mute all the noise and be fearless. You will find your unique self through consistently making art.
