Artist interview - Lola Jovan

Our community of artists is the core foundation of Artfinder. With such a vast community based in all corners of the world, we wanted to help them share more about their artist journey, their artistic process and technique and what inspires them. Today, we chat with one of our amazing painters, Lola Jovan.

Can you introduce yourself, where you are from and how long you have been with Artfinder for?

My name is Lola Jovan, currently living in beautiful Portland, Oregon! I have been with Artfinder since 2016.

How would you describe your work?

An exploration of emotion and experience in paint, from fantasy to abstract, portraiture to landscape, oils to pen and ink.

What influences you and your work?

Poetry, prose, hiking and play!

What does your creative process involve?

Often, something I read stirs an emotional response I want to capture - sending me scurrying to identify colours, compositions and styles that best capture that emotion.

Have you changed as an artist overtime?

Absolutely. I firmly believe in following the muse, challenging myself to vary styles and mediums and to tackle subject matter that may not be for everyone.

What’s your favourite artwork you created and why?

Ack! So many favorites! But last year I created a collection of werewolves called "The Downside of Lycanthropy" - it was the most fun ever! Exploring the emotional and social lives of werewolves just gave me fits of giggles and ahas.

What do you think is the role of art/artists in society?

Giving viewers access to emotions and experiences that might otherwise be difficult to access easily - making them feel and think.

What advice do you have for emerging artists looking to make a living out of their art career?

80/20 rule - 80% of art is marketing, connecting, writing content, posting, etc. The other 20% is creating. And in that 20% you must be bold, brazen and true to yourself.
