Artist interview - Belinda Reynell

Our community of artists is the core foundation of Artfinder. With such a vast community based in all corners of the world, we wanted to help them share more about their artist journey, their artistic process and technique and what inspires them. Today, we chat with one of our amazing oil painters, Belinda Reynell.

Can you introduce yourself, where you are from and how long you have been with Artfinder for?

Hello. I'm Belinda Reynell and I'm from Devon in the UK. I've been with Artfinder since October 2015.

How would you describe your work?

I'm a contemporary landscape artist expressing emotion through my work.

What influences you and your work?

The beautiful landscapes, seascapes and treescapes around where I live in beautiful Devon alongside my emotive response to them influences my work.

What does your creative process involve?

I work in oil on canvas although I often start a painting with acrylics. I layer my work with colour and texture using scraper, rags, brushes and palette knives.

Have you changed as an artist overtime?

I hope I'm always evolving as an artist which keeps my work new and exciting. My work has also become more emotive rather than representative over time.

What’s your favourite artwork you created and why?

I'm not sure I have a favourite but I do like working on large canvases and when I have a bigger studio I shall increase the size of my canvas even more.

What do you think is the role of art/artists in society?

I think the role of artists in society is becoming stronger and stronger. We have many roles. Some artist ask questions of society, some celebrate the beauty in the world and some make statements whether it be political or otherwise.

What advice do you have for emerging artists looking to make a living out of their art career?

I'd say if making art is what you love doing go for it. There is a lot of pressure to fit into society, but being an artist gives you freedom to possibly escape it even if it's in a small way. Say yes to things and don't give up!
