About Vassa Ponomarjova

  • Biography
Hi! My name is Vassa, and I am a professional artist based in Tallinn, Estonia.
I graduated from the "Old Tallinn Art School" and the Estonian Academy of Arts' painting department. Drawing and painting have been my passion since childhood. I am fortunate to have a wonderful studio in the heart of Tallinn.
I recently took a few years off for maternity leave, during which I focused on being a devoted mother to my two little boys and worked on illustrations. About a year ago, I returned to my studio with renewed energy, greater inspiration, and a deeper emotional maturity. Motherhood has immensely inspired me, providing a rich source of new ideas in exploring a woman's life, her role in nature, and her relationship with it. My work is drawn towards exploring feminism and the internal conflicts a woman faces, challenging societal and maternal expectations. That way woman and "story of her life" is most frequently present in my works.

My paintings are completely original and each piece is unique. I specialize in the genre of figuratism, infused with elements of surrealism and 'fleeting' transformations that our minds conjure in memories.
Yellow is my favorite color to use in my artworks; its versatility allows it to represent a spectrum of emotions and concepts, including joy, memories, nostalgia, pain, melancholy, dreams, fear, and tranquility. I primarily work with acrylic and oil paints on canvases of various sizes, occasionally using paper for smaller projects. I also love to make smaller linocut pieces. To date, I have participated in several exhibitions, and my artworks are featured in both private and corporate collections.

    Event: Somewhere, over the rainbow

    Dates: 5 Apr 2024 - 26 May 2024

Venue: MONA The Museum of New Art, Rüütli 40a 80010, Pärnu

"Somewhere, over the rainbow..."—an anthem that has resonated across the past half-century, particularly among oppressed and marginalized communities, including sexual minorities. In times of turmoil, there is an increased demand for fairy tales, as they symbolize a beacon of hope amidst adversity.

In 1939, against the backdrop of the burgeoning Great War and political upheaval in Europe, the world faced circumstances reminiscent of our present day. However, today's challenges are compounded by a global ecological crisis, a consequence of human activities that has further strained the underlying systems. The echoes of geopolitical imperialism and authoritarian leadership that were prevalent in 1939 persist in our current reality.

    Event: "Black and White"

    Dates: 21 Jan 2024 - 24 Feb 2024

Venue: Paide Cultural Center, Pärnu 18, Paide, 72712 Järva maakond, Estonia

I am participating with five paintings in a large group exhibition in Paide Music and Theater house (Paide cultural center).

The exhibition "Black and White" deals with the theme of duality in our lives, emphasizing contrasts. Contrasts that co-exist within ourselves - affection and the pain of loss, the joy of motherhood and the discomfort of violating personal boundaries, youth and aging, the benefits of sport and the injuries associated with it. We often try to separate these phenomena, push them as far away from each other as possible, trying to avoid one aspect and suppress the other. However, they are two sides of the same coin, one does not exist without the other. In the exhibition "Black and White", young contemporary artists present their works that illuminate different aspects of life that are perceived differently in society - from widely accepted and glorified to those that cause debate and suppression.
