Biography
One should not feel the need to be 'allowed' to view a work of art.
If one does not understand, or know the vocabulary; say in abstraction: one should still be able to enjoy or dislike a shape, colour, space in a composition, simply for what it is without feeling the urgency to gain permission or licence to understand it.
Art is simple and can be complex.
EVERYONE IS ALLOWED TO VIEW IT AND HAVE AN OPINION.
It is about creating a shift in your view or evoke feelings, good, bad, ugly or beautiful.
It is true there are rules and perimeters for making and understanding art better: {The elements and principles of design} but once you have a basic idea of those, you CAN break them all.
People ask me what do you paint, create? I feel as though a good artist creates prolifically in multiple disciplines and styles. Paper, pen, canvas, clay, through the lens of a camera. grasping an understanding of everything. Like the leaves or fruit of a tree, reaching up and out BUT also in full spectrum the roots stretching deep and wide, constantly looking for more. Like that of the mind of child, un obstructed and open.
As an artist I can create, and make something and get comfortable in a style but to grow one must push ones comfort levels to new places. In abstraction I get to play and experiment with new mediums and styles. With these new techniques I can apply them to my more illustrated works.
Abstraction to me is complete freedom which allows me to explore new technique and freedom of movement.
A good piece of art should hold the viewer gently and keep them in a place of wandering. Like walking through a garden, captivated and contemplative. In this work I still find myself looking around wherever I start in it and finding a new path every time. In this form of of creation I want to walk around, spin, go over it , under it and taste it if I could.
Calmly and constantly searching for something.
Like an equation that only the viewer has the answer to.
I have a strong love for illustration. The precision and accurate lines appeal to me which is why I moved toward abstraction, to challenge and loosen my style.
So now I dance between the two.
