About Isla Mackenzie-Doyle

  • Biography
I have overcome physical disability to become trained in the lost wax casting process as a wax moulder in one of the countries largest foundries. I have taken those skills and opened my own studio where I create my own works to be cast in bronze. I then chase and colour the pieces myself. I am driven by the material itself, the permanence, resilience, and ability to create a feeling of immense gravity or incredible lightness. Physical mastery of the material is central to my process and the making is a translation of the intense gaze I have poured on the subject. I am an inherent gleaner and make my work to understand the world around me, to take apart the subject and examine it through sculpture. My first piece in bronze, Backbone, was a very personal work to understand the human spine, the faulty part of myself. I wanted to understand and overcome it through making the work. I am currently examining the wildlife and countryside I am fortunate enough to see around me. I wish to convey the movement, brutality and beauty of their world through my work.
Each piece is hand made to order and I make the waxes for each piece personally, each one is unique and hand signed.  The process will take up to 12 weeks to produce but you will be kept up to date with progress and can personalise pieces through colour and stone choices.
