An artist called Ted
There was an artist called Ted
Who had colourful pictures
in his head...
“I live to paint,”
he often said
So prolific,
he couldn’t go to bed
But created oils
on canvas instead...
"They could be worth lots,
when I'm dead..."
he mused to his wife
The poor woman, who married Ted...
"As long as it keeps you occupied,
I'm happy," she said.

The naïve paintings of Ted Wates are simple, happy and typically brightly coloured. Usually produced on postcard size 7 x 5 inch canvas on board, the paintings of Ted Wates are mainly produced in oils using the alla prima method, completed in one sitting. Ted favours applying thick lashings of oils with palette knives and fingers, occasionally brushes. Bright happy colours are vital as are interesting scenes. Often his simple pieces are landscapes featuring people, animals or something else that has caught his attention. Ted Wates is the nom de plume of Tim Saunders, who pays homage to the late great naïve painter Fred Yates, who Tim greatly admires. So welcome to the paintings of the Happy Lowry of Hampshire. His book The Art of Ted Wates is available in ebook and paperback from amazon. Ted's paintings can be found in private collections in England, France and Greece.
