About Susana Wessling
Biography
I am a visual artist from Portugal, living in Lithuania and currently taking part in an Artist in Residence program in Finland. I have completed a BA in painting in Lisbon and a MFA in contemporary art practice in Edinburgh and taken part in several different Artist in Residence programs.
My practice focuses on this misfit identities created by nomadism and diaspora, looking at relationships between site specificity/ local cultural identities and their discourse as a collective. The exhibition space takes the form of a non site, a transitional place where practices go through and live beyond it. The act of moving is a subject in itself, creating artworks that fold, or a giant map on a very thin piece of paper that can be rolled up. I keep a record of the maps of the five places where I’ve lived in the form of tattoos on my skin.
