    "Joe Maddon"

    "Joe Maddon" --former Tampa Bay Rays baseball team manager, a work-in-progress (graphite pencil on 11X14 Bristol board). Like other recently-completed pieces, and others in-progress, I am honing in on finer detailed works. Hence, more studio time is invested. So much that, like Albert Einstein stated to his son: "That is the way to learn the most, that when you are doing something with such enjoyment that you don’t notice that the time passes. I am sometimes so wrapped up in my work that I forget about the noon meal. . . " How prophetic; marvelously true! With pencil in hand, what some may define as tedium I categorize as utter joy.     "Saul Goodman" a work-in-progress (graphite pencil on 11X14 Bristol board). Details, details, details. Perhaps dubiously over-ambitious, I set out to render this piece with only a 0.5mm mechanical pencil and a Derwent 5H pencil. Among the pores, wrinkles, birth marks, crevasses, cleft, folds, and textile weaves, I am on my way to a fulfilling self-challenge. For those who may be unfamiliar with the subject matter: "Better Call Saul" is a spin-off from the "Breaking Bad" series whose lead character and series' namesake is intriguingly played by Bob Odenkirk.
