Biography
Sofia was born in Leningrad in the former USSR (now the Russian Federation) in 1974. Sofia’s interest in both art and design developed through close work with Soviet artists Boris Kazakov and Nikolai Koshelkov in a specialist art school in St Petersburg. Subsequently, she entered the University of Technology and Design in that city where she gained her degree in Fine Art and Textiles. Following graduation, Sofia worked simultaneously as an artist and a private art tutor at her studio. The artist's move to Scotland in 2000 heralded a new, experimental use of decorative and fine art and she began to develop the distinctive style of floral painting which has gained her an international reputation.
Sofia’s work is inspired by the natural world around her and she is particularly interested in the complex structures and patterns of flowers. Sofia’s distinctive approach to watercolour painting is characterised by a subtle use of bold, bright colours combined with detailed, gel pen graphic work. As her style has evolved in recent years, the artist has developed a highly sophisticated mastery of watercolour technique, going beyond a direct, realist approach to create more experimental interpretations of her subject matter.
