Biography
Paul Russell is an inventor and contemporary artist specializing in stone sculpting of various materials including alabaster, pyrophyllite, calcite, soapstone, and marble. Primarily taking inspiration from nature and the sea, designs are informed by choice of material, often appealing to the tactile sense, and containing a touch of whimsy.
Russell comes from a long line of artists, including great grandfather Axel Larson, a professional wood carver whose skills enabled him to emigrate from Sweden to the United States in 1890. He deeply admired his uncle Donn Russell, who was an accomplished post war contemporary artist who lived and worked on Nantucket Island and in New York City.
Despite a lifelong interest in art and design, Russell focused on his 34-year career in the field of distribution packaging. His innovative thinking was expressed in numerous inventions, including securing 27 U.S. patents; he has also held various professional and university board positions. Russell’s family, including three children, has also been the beneficiary of his creativity through inventive home projects, ingenious costumes, and clever theme events.
Now that he has stepped away from a corporate career, Russell is entering a new artistic phase as he explores a range of expressive endeavors and stylistic approaches. Enjoy viewing his work!
