Rodney is a contemporary abstract painter based in Lytham, in the North West of England. He is deeply fascinated by elements in life that affect conscious wellbeing and sense of place in the world, often highlighting those influences we carry with us unnoticed.
Holt’s work captures internalised thoughts, emotions, feelings, and ideas, presenting them in an external setting through abstract forms. His creative process typically begins with small sketches derived from a title or a collection of words. He often jots down ideas in his journal, which he later transforms into larger pieces of art.
Circles frequently appear in Holt’s earlier body of work, symbolising his DNA as an artist through representations and abstractions. His 2024 paintings, as well as some of his collage and ink works, primarily utilised a palette of black, white, and red. Themes from previous works often reappear if they remain relevant to his thoughts.
His latest work signifies a shift from the use of circles and bold colours, embracing instead a more subdued palette of intertwining curves. This new approach creates a sense of flow and harmony, with five complementary colours collaborating to produce a visually soothing and cohesive composition.
Holt's artistic journey has been marked by a quest to understand himself, his place in the world, and to develop a unique painting style characterised by simplicity.
Although he was raised predominantly around Manchester, Holt has lived in numerous locations and does not consider himself anchored to a single place. Initially, he pursued a career as an engineer, driven by a passion for technical drawing in his school years. It wasn't until his mid-30s, around 2010, that Holt actively pursued painting and became deeply immersed in it.
