About Rod Norman

  • Biography
In light of the recent coronavirus outbreak let me reassure all collectors that all new art materials are thoroughly wiped down with bleach wipes outside before storing in my studio for three days before use.

I am self-isolated. All older materials were ordered long before the outbreak started.

Any paintings shipped are virus free upon packaging. Be sure to wipe them when you get the package since it will have been handled many times. The paintings, however, are fine.

    Stay safe and healthy.

I just shipped a commission for a 30" x 40" painting titled Private Commission. I am available for commissions if You have a favorite idea but don't see something you like here or need a much larger painting. The transaction is always done through Artfinder.

A former resident of Bend, Oregon, I now reside in Eugene with my family. I have been painting since I was a small child, winning my first exhibition prize at the age of eight. I studied drawing and painting with Dr. Charles Deitz, the director of the local art museum in Ohio. I painted in oils for years until acrylics gained a strong foothold and were deemed permanent. I work in either but prefer acrylics. I lived in New York City for twenty years and had access to the masterpieces in the museums there. I studied at the Art Student's league in the evening classes while working as an executive at Benton and Bowles.

My work has been evolving through the years. For a while I have worked in different media, primarily oils. Now that the weather is better, I am painting outdoors with oils again. Most of my previous artworks were executed in acrylics.  Since with oils I have to work outside, when winter sets in, I will switch back to acrylics. I use a technique that makes the acrylics look like the oil paintings.

The painting sizes are all standard 5x7, 8x10, 9x12, 11x14, and 16x20. I recently did a large commission at 30x40 inches for a client. She was very happy with the result. Frames for standard sizes are available pre-made at any Michael's art supply store. This can save considerable expenses that might be incurred selecting custom framing.

I have studied and traveled extensively, viewing the works of great artists in different major museums in Paris and in the Hermitage, learning from them. They are my inspiration. I studied under Fiore Custode. While in NYC I curated art exhibitions and have a large sculpture in the collection of a contributor to the Whitney. I also exhibited in a gallery in SOHO in New York City.

When visiting my shop check out the collections to see items placed in categories. It makes finding things you like easier.

Favorite Quote: “Painting is easy when you don't know how, but very difficult when you do.” Edgar Degas

    These paintings are all originals.
