Henry Miller on travelling: "One's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things."
In my work I attempt to capture the light, colour, space and emotions I feel when in a particular location.
As my background is partly in photographic printing I see and react very strongly to light and colour in particular and this, invariably, is reflected in my work and the reason I choose to work in acrylics - the colours I feel are more vivid and the process of applying paint to canvas feels more immediate and changes constantly. As I originally trained as an actor I also have a penchant for the dramatic! Light and shade provide this for me.
I tend to work from the photographs I take when I travel, I don't paint "en plein air" as I found when I have I tended to get bogged down in detail. I prefer instead to absorb a place and employ a more emotional and impressionistic approach when I get back to my home here in North London.
I'm a keen walker, and to escape the bustle of London I gravitate towards isolated places, so if you notice few figures in paintings - that is why.
I hope you enjoy my work, please feel free to get in touch either here or on my Instagram/Facebook pages.
