Event: Vanity Unfair
Dates: 19 Mar 2014 - 29 Mar 2014
Art Café London is pleased to announce Vanity Unfair, an art exhibition showcasing 30 Italian artists and their interpretation of vanity for March 2014.
On the wave of the success obtained in Italy, Art Café London brings this international event to London in the striking neoclassical venue of the Crypt Galley in St Pancras.
Vanity Unfair wants to represent the vanity in all its shapes and contradictions, investigating from its iconic to its social ambivalence. Considered as a form of self-idolatry and an intense belief in yourself that valorises the best you, and from which none of us can be told to be immune, vanity represents the engine of our actions, our attitudes, or an unconscious demand for self and social recognition. This immodest Narcissus silently inhabiting our souls makes us also deeply annoyed by the others vanity or even presumption of being able to play an unfairly game, for which the rules are only applied to others and not to ourselves.
In this edition of the International Exhibition of Contemporary Art with the motto "When the material regenerated itself like art", we would like to give our winning artists of the Italian edition the new task of interpreting and vanity using their creativity and sensitivity to unravel all its ambiguity in the contemporary society.
Through expression, meaning, and the use of all types of material Vanity Unfair wants to amuse its public with a variegated selection of art, painting, photos, installations, and music performances exalting the different artists' connotations of vanity.
Despite Vanity may be an unfair companion, Art Café London will fairly host Desperate Artwives contributing to their social purposes, and Greo Photo with his special performance Vanity Chair Experience, involving the spectator for an unconventional experience.

Biography
UK-based artist Raffaella Bertolini employs a variety of media and forms, working with acrylics, graphite, oils, charcoal, spray paint and collage.
Originally from Italy, Raffaella received her diploma in Art from the Liceo Artistico Arturo Martini in Savona. Her main influences are derived from popular and urban culture, fashion, art, music and literature, along with environmental and political issues. In her portraiture, she blends a (literally!) colourful humour with Psychedelic Art to create her own brand of “Psychedelic Pop Art”, focusing primarily on the female figure. A large number of her “Icons” portraits use alcohol ink. In these works, she celebrates not only the famous but also hidden heroes, such as members of the London Underground scene, unearthed in her recent artwork.
A Mondrian-style background complements that approach in one of her latest series of paintings, which takes on the popular French icons Serge Gainsbourg, Jane Birkin and Brigitte Bardot – each, in their own way, representing ‘La Femme’.
Refusing to limit her work, Raffaella is a storyteller who finds inspiration in a variety of artistic expressions, fed by her lifelong passion and ambition for creative expression. She incorporates elements of her various muses, which lately come from urban/street art. In her urban and mixed-media paintings, as well as in her beautifully detailed drawings, she explores themes of sensuality, humour, religion, and mental health.
Raffaella’s artwork has been regularly showcased in exhibitions in the UK and New York, and the breadth and versatility of her talents have been increasingly recognized. Her exceptional painting Re-Veiled was the runner-up among 40 participants in the online competition “V Gran Premio Citta’ – a prize organized by the Savona art movement, the “Movimento Arte del XXI Secolo”, to recognize excellence in contemporary art expression.
Raffaella Bertolini’s works are in many private collections in Europe, Australia, USA and Japan.
