Biography
Life painting, the main body of my work, stems from layered exploration into relationships between form, colour and space and an ongoing series in movement. Using brush, skewer, fingers, rags, I draw directly in paint, ink, charcoal, graphite, or a mix of these, keeping a fresh and immediate response to the subject.
Colour is a language in which I can communicate.
Following a long period of
observational drawing and teaching of fine botanical modelling, my painting developed from a churning and insistent need to express myself in a different
way.
As my painting developed over the years I made a considered decision to not detail faces. The simple truth is I don’t see it as an important part of my work. Rather I seek to understand and portray some of the unseen layering and humanness in all of us. Faced with beautiful views - seemingly the way society seeks to measure, display, judge us - my instinct is to turn and find something hidden, less obvious, more real.
I found myself inspired early on in my learning by the large paintings of Jenny Saville at the Sensation Exhibition, Royal Academy in 1997 and by the freedom of colour use by Howard Hodgkin.
