    Sketching out and about

I love to sketch when I am out and about. I am lucky to live in the beautiful Surrey Hills National Landscape and I can find plenty of inspiration just a few minutes walk from my home. I have a trusty travel waterolour box and some lovely travel paintbrushes.

My recent etching, 'A River Runs Through It' of the River Thames at Kingston upon Thames, is made using two plates, one inked in orange and one in blue ink. It was made for an exhibition in Oldenburg, Germany later this summer and has also won the Pressing Matters Magazine print challenge, being featured in issue 26 of this lovely magazine.

Drawing in the Garden under Lockdown

Since the Covid 19 restrictions have come into force I have been drawing in my garden and at the allotment. I have completed two concertina sketchbooks which will provide a rich source of ideas for future work.

    Revealing a new lithograph

    Revealing a new lithograph

I have recently been working at Oaks Editions Lithography Studio to make stone lithographs. This photograph shows the moment when the print is lifted from the stone to reveal the image of some rocks at low tide on the Asturian coast in northern Spain. I'll be adding the finished print to my Artfinder shop soon!

    Working on a new mezzotint

In this photograph you can see me working on a new mezzotint. Mezzotint plates have been rocked to produce a rich velvety black and the image is created by burnishing back from black.

    Sketching at the allotments

    Sketching at the allotments

I draw all the time. Drawing underpins my work; whether the end result is representational or abstract, it is all based in my observation and response to my surroundings. I love the allotments and am planning a new series of work inspired by them.
