An Exhibition Celebrating Lockdown Creativity.
View the exhibition online at https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=esbL6AfoTSg
This year, the theme of our Open is ‘creativity during lockdown’. The response to this theme has been inspiring, demonstrating the invention and resilience shown by artists from across Wrexham, Wales and the United Kingdom.
We received submissions from over 350 artists who were each able to provide three artworks for consideration. Three judges were then asked to select a range of works that not only fit the theme of the exhibition but also complemented each other and created a coherent display.
Together, the judges agreed on a selection of 117 artworks from 102 artists.
Biography
I am a printmaker creating original, limited edition linoleum relief prints in my studio in mid-Wales and am a member of the Aberystwyth Printmakers & Swansea Print Workshop.
A long-held interest in archaeology means that I am particularly drawn to buildings and structures in their landscape settings. I am also fascinated by the concept of liminality; by boundaries, thresholds and transitional spaces.
The starting point for a print is usually one of my own photographs. Using a variety of manual and automatic processes, together with compositional sketches, I abstract and manipulate them to achieve a working image which is then transferred to the lino ready for cutting.
I was initially attracted to linocut by its graphic feel and the technical nature of the processes involved. Whilst this technicality might seem at odds with creativity, I have found that the medium offers almost infinite scope for artistic expression. I particularly relish the intellectual, technical and artistic challenges involved in the creation of an image by the repeated transfer of layers of ink onto paper via the medium of carved linoleum. There is often an element of serendipity in the process which adds an extra element of enjoyment and discovery to the process.
