    MY STUDIO

This is my studio. Very nice, warm and cozy. And then painting in the attic is very bohemian. Well, maybe the ceiling was a little higher I would avoid constantly hitting my head, but these are details.

    REPEAT

    REPEAT

I often repeat the execution of a character, in a seemingly identical way. It might seem like a repetitive or boring activity, but I believe the opposite. It's like playing the same song several times. In reality, in the succession of executions the character gradually refines, evolves and changes. It is a really interesting thing, to observe how characters like Mikey Mouse or Felix the Cat have evolved over time, to name some examples that we all know. It is something that often dispenses with a pre-established project, the character grows and evolves as if he had a life of his own, develops his own character, his own sign, his colors. It is something that fascinates and surprises even those who draw it.

Sometimes they ask me, “OK, why is this staring at old American cartoons?” Well, cartoon is the way of telling that I have always been more natural, pleasant and spontaneous, and the ‘primitive’ ones have a particular charm, a very strong evocative power. I was pleasantly surprised to see how much this perception is also shared by a very young audience, very distant culturally and from that period. One could argue that even in the following decades formidable cartoons, authentic masterpieces were designed, and it is very true. But those from the 20s and 30s, and the music that accompanied them, have (at least for me) something more. They are not vintage, they are really ‘ancient’: they represent the origins of a world and an era, they are almost mythical archetypes. In the cartoon language they correspond to the ‘very, very distant country’ of fairy tales.

    JUNGLE FEVER

    JUNGLE FEVER

When the weather allows it, I love working outdoors, in the sunlight. I live in the countryside, and my house has a small courtyard overlooking the garden. It's my little jungle, populated by flowers and cats.

    OLD FRAMES

    OLD FRAMES

A peculiarity of my works is the use of old vintage frames, often bought in flea markets, repainted and gilded. I like the contrast created between the cartoon subjects and the golden and decorated, slightly baroque frames. The result is fun "precious" objects, which play with the idea of "ancient" and the mechanisms of memory.

    Restoring Frames

    Restoring Frames

I also use raw frames in a particular resin, very porous, which has characteristics similar to wood. I treat these frames with a coat of white acrylic primer, on which I then pass several layers of gold paint. To accentuate the "antique" effect, I finish them with dark gold and brown waxes.
