Biography
The purpose of my work is to provide something vibrant and intriguing to view, that then has a moment of reappraisal and realisation (ahhhh, I see it now!! So THAT'S your road and....there's your house?) when the subject is revealed to them by the owner of the piece.
I like to take a location and distil it down to it's core components. Then using a mixture of colour and composition (both on the canvas and with the canvases themselves), alter the perspective given to viewers.
I leave all canvases unsigned on the front, so as to let the owner hang the pieces how they like, letting them be part of the creative process and final piece. Some have also said that after a while this has given them more flexibility with the artwork - e.g. as they've redecorated they've hung the painting a different way
My art journey:
Art was one of the few things that held my attention as a child. I loved it. As I went through school my mother would lament as I always had some smudged acrylic paint staining my shirt and trousers. Having been to the same school as Jamie Hewlett (artist for the Gorillaz) I studied him, alongside the trendy Banksy and became interested in this 'flat' style. This fascination was hugely increased as I found one of my ancestors - Theyre Lee-Elliot - was the official painter for the National Ballet, and did a lot of poster style artwork during wartime and subsequently (you can see him at the V&A and National Portrait Gallery). My fascination grew, and so I continued to study art.
Unfortunately after disagreements over my education with my tutors I gave up my studies and instead trained as a lawyer. It wasn't long however until I returned, I couldn't help it; I missed painting too much!! Gradually finding the style you see today, I love how the lines, shapes and colours provide a vibrancy that belies the hidden meaning to the paintings. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
To date I have mainly done commissions - and happy to do one for you too!! - as I really enjoy making something quite personal to the owner of the piece. So as to build up a shop on Artfinder I have started to build a wider portfolio of pieces from the places where I've travelled and the inspiration I have found there.
Some of my main influences:
Piet Mondrian, Aurelie Nemours and Gunter Graeser for their construction and minimalist style. Theyre Lee-Elliot (ancestor) for his 'flat' style. And Bridget Riley for colour and vibrancy.
