About Olha Vlasova

  • Biography

Hello, I’m Olha, an artist from Ukraine who can’t imagine life without painting.

I began my creative journey at the age of 9. I loved painting so much that my parents used to punish me by forbidding me from attending art school. That was the harshest punishment for me.

I studied at an art school, an art college, and the Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts. Now, I combine my painting and decorative skills in my vibrant and optimistic works.

My creative research is driven by the desire to convey the exceptional beauty, self-sufficiency and strength of women. I grew up in an environment where the pursuit of beauty and aesthetics was often seen as a sign of frivolity and superficiality. My creative journey has helped me to rethink my own femininity. I now explore themes of embracing one's uniqueness, the intimacy of close relationships, and a nuanced appreciation of beauty.

As an artist, I focus my research on conveying the personal experiences of women who encounter condescension and the diminution of their value due to sensitivity and femininity. I convey that the concepts of femininity and seriousness, playfulness and rationality are not mutually exclusive and can coexist.

My work participates in the discussion on tolerance and the pursuit of creating a safe space for self-expression. I incorporate themes of new sincerity in my work, embodying the desire to be oneself without the fear of encountering mockery, sarcasm, or societal labeling.

    Event: Aesthetic Anomalies

    Venue: Art-Collide, online

My submission has been chosen as a finalist in the "Aesthetic Anomalies" competition at Art-Collide

    Event: Ancestral call

    Dates: 20 Jan 2024 - 10 Feb 2024

    Venue: Art Basel, Switzerland

Three female artists from Ukraine were selected as honored participants: Dasha Pogodina (b.1992), Tetiana Pchelnykova (b.1970), and Olha Vlasova (b.1994).

The painting works of these three artists demonstrate the feminine and the connection to roots, the search for a piece of the ancestors in each of us.

The women use natural materials and interact with animals. In this way they seek support in their roots and ancestors. Especially in difficult times of war, when many are disconnected from home, this inner work becomes a strong support and salvation.

The exhibition is complemented by objects made of natural materials with symbolic sacred significance and united into a single ancestral altar by the artist and exhibition curator Anastasia Vasilyeva (b. 1982).

    Event: PLACES OF POWER

    Dates: 5 Dec 2023 - 5 Feb 2024

Venue: The Uartist Сommunity, Ljubljana, Slovenia

Unfortunately, not all Ukrainian places of strength survived the russian aggression, but even their memories give us power and drive to continue the struggle.
