About Ninfa Burnham

I am a British artist living and working in Barcelona, Spain. I’ve loved mark making since I was a toddler, decorating my big sister’s bedroom wallpaper with her pink glossy lipstick! 

I describe my work as 'stitched paintings' as a lot of the linework is created with free motion embroidered stitches. They're brought to life with acrylic paint, papers, fabrics and wool fibres. Line, pattern and colour are strong features of my work. I tend to focus on detail and close-ups of my subjects with little or no background so that seemingly ordinary things become almost monumental. 

Barcelona is full of Art Nouveau architecture (from the Gaudi era), even in its everyday shops. These are a constant source of inspiration for me too, and frequently appear as subjects in my work. Most of the art I create has a connection to the everyday - the objects or places that we interact with. Sometimes they are nostalgic and inspired by people's memories. Often they're inspired by vintage eras like my 'Talkies' collection, which focuses on telephones and the way in which we used to communicate.
