About Joe McHarg

  • Biography

I am an architect by education, and profession.
I have practiced architecture for over four decades. A good deal of my experience as an artist developed from doing architectural plans and illustrations. In addition to my architectural work, I have always enjoyed producing works of “visual art”. It has provided a wonderful counterpoint to the precise work involved in architectural drawings: the highly precise vs. the “free and spontaneous”.

I am constantly experimenting with new ideas and varied subject types. I fully expect that to be the case for the rest of my life. Lately I am attempting to create “semi-abstract” art where there is just enough realism to cause the viewer to use his/her imagination to perceive the gist of the work. Other than that, I don’t have any deep philosophical ideas about my art except that I want to produce beautiful works that people will enjoy and be proud to have hanging on their walls.

I still work with the same media that I have used in architectural work: India ink, graphite pencil and acrylic paint on archival quality mylar film, probably the most long-lasting and durable drawing surface ever invented. You may notice that my paintings tend to be rather large. I enjoy working “large” but try to keep them affordable. On that subject (affordability), the online galleries have made it so easy for artists to display and offer their work, that prices can be reduced to a point where it doesn’t make any sense to buy reproductions. Now, everyone can own original art.

Thus far (2019) my paintings have been shipped to The Netherlands, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Australia, Singapore, Canada, Austria, Belarus, New Zeland, Slovakia, Scotland, The Czech Republic, Italy, France, Germany, Croatia, Belarus and throughout the United States.

Education:  Bachelors degree from the School of Architecture and the Arts at Auburn University.
Taught “Architecture and Design” at The Savannah College of Art and Design.

    Associations: Roswell Fine Art Alliance
    South Cobb Arts Alliance
    Spruill Center for the Arts
    Atlanta Fine Art League

“chosen for permanent exhibit” in the “Black and White” competition at Linus Gallery.
