About Matt Buckett

  • Biography
I paint and illustrate in three main categories, animals, landscapes and portraits. I work in most mediums including ink, watercolour, gouache, oil on canvas and dry methods such as charcoal and graphite.

My paintings of animals, both pets and wildlife, focus on character, composition and colour. I always try to create art that is engaging, often choosing to exaggerate the contrast between foreground and background which introduces some more expressive painting.

My landscape paintings are colourful and vibrant. Living and working in Devon offers a wonderful opportunity to paint the landscape around me and there is no shortage of subject matter. I like to combine elements of detail with loose, expressive mark making to achieve a unique contemporary feel.

Having trained in Fine Art I tend to have a leaning towards the figurative and a particular love of portrait painting. I paint in a contemporary style that allows me the freedom to choose when to tighten up the detail, and when to free up the painting. What I attempt to do in every piece of artwork is maximise the contrast in all elements of the work; colour, composition, light and application of paint.

Many thanks for reading, I hope you enjoy my work.
