About Mathew Halpin

  • Biography
Mathew is an Australian born artist with a diploma in theatre design as well. The style of Mathew's paintings is hard to pin down. He is influenced by the cultures of where he lives. When he was living in Tallinn, Estonia he became a little obsessed with painting the main local Russian souvenir, the Matryoshka. The Matryoshkas Mathew painted were nothing like the ones you buy in a souvenir shop. The artist likes to look at quirky parts of cultures and explores them via painting.  Since living in Greece his paintings are often comical observations of Greece and it's people. Mathew's paintings often tell stories. The stories normally are about serious issues done with a humorous twist. Currently his work has become more figurative with a focus on modern dancers based in Crete. Mathew also runs an artists residency on Crete called, 'The Lakkos Artists Residency'.

Mathew checks his emails regularly. Painting orders are normally shipped the day after the request is made. Smaller paintings come with their inside frame so you can hang them straight away. Large paintings come rolled up. All the buyer needs to do is take the rolled up painting to a framer or art materials shop and get it put onto a frame

    Event: Babushkas Adventures

    Dates: 27 Apr 2018 - 2 Jun 2018

Venue: Agapi Smpoken Gallery, Heraklion, Greece

Mathew's current exhibition in AS Gallery is a retrospective look at the Babushka paintings he made while living in Tallinn, Estonia. In a world where making a living from selling art is difficult he turned to the subject of souvenir as an art form. The Babushkas are painted with the theme of his experiences living in an ex Soviet country and visiting Russia. As an Australian the artist was brought up to expect Russia to be a villain. On experiencing the truth he found that the Russian culture is very diverse and full of interesting topics.
