About Martyn Lucas
Biography
Martyn has over twenty years experience as an artist and curator. His work has been included in exhibitions throughout the UK, and in Canada and the USA.
A constant theme over the years has been landscape, and in particular the use of watercolour. His work explores the richness of this traditional medium with images derived from sketchbooks, memories, photographs and painting in-situ. The paintings evoke the experience of being in and travelling through the landscape: of looking at sky, horizon, trees and hills, the changing light and weather. Some are of particular places (such as the Scottish Highlands), whilst others emphasise the more abstract qualities of painting and fleeting views from car or train windows (the 'difficulty of landscape').
The works are layered over a period of time, often with the use of pastel and collage, with the qualities of colour, tone and composition reflecting both visual and emotional responses to landscape.
