About Martin Belton

  • Biography
My paintings are records of my travels, my daily life, my thoughts and experiences. My paintings from my travels are made from sketches, photographs, and memories. Often my memories are faded and misty, and I try to reflect that mood in the way I paint. My abstract works explore design theories, such as gestalt principles of perception, geometric abstraction, and ideas from the Bauhaus and Russian Avant Garde. My nudes are a celebration of the human form, and explore the concepts of sexuality and desire, and the human condition. I am also inspired by 19th century Japanese aesthetics, and experiment with decorative artwork that explores myth, superstition, belief, and emotion. I want my artwork to speak to people's emotions, evoke certain moods and stir people's souls. For me, art is both therapy, expression and a form of communication that expresses what cannot be expressed with words.
