ARSEST FLIPIO | CREO | IGOR ZEIGER | JAMES TUNNEY | JESSICA OMITOLA | LUCY MARKS | MARTA ZAWADZKA | NICOLE TSHUMBA A.K.A. NITSHU | OLIVIA TOPPIN | WAFAA AHMED
At a time where identity has taken a new meaning and approach, the PORTRAIT exhibition will show a selection of new original works by 10 emerging artists from different countries including Poland, Greece, Israel, Nigeria and The UK. On entering, you will find society interpretations through portraiture, artworks capturing the exact likeness of their sitters as well as abstract works offering great psychological depth. We trace varied connections in this particular genre as well as the fusion of oils, inks, sprays, acrylics, and mixed media to create penetrating and powerful works.
We examine some of the key strands of portraiture through the modern observational works by Arsest Flipio, making use of mainly primary colours and enhancing certain features as they explore human weaknesses and their effect on every day life. Identity is approached from CREO’s works as they unravel contemporary ethnical, cultural and racial issues. His works portray a world where race is irrelevant by using a similar dark colour blend in all portraits and highlighting through bright striking colours, their individual and complex stories. We can also explore social and celebrity portraits through the works of James Tunney, which depict famous artists or sportsmen. Although he gains true likeness and the faces are recognizable, he creates a magical and mystical atmosphere with a mix of shapes, colours and contrasts in an expressionist style, confronting us with another view and perception of the identity of the portrayed subject.
