About Markos Kampanis

  • Biography

Born in Greece but studied painting in London. A painter but also a printmaker, illustrator and a keen muralist.I am a representational artist but not necessarily a traditionalist. A coherent style both in terms of subject matter and of technique is not my priority. I use the abundance of painting materials almost with the passion of a fetishist, but am also at ease with contemporary digital technology. In parallel with painting, art history is also a fascination and often this finds its way in my art itself.  I firmly believe in daily methodical work, rather than inspiration. Landscapes, trees, still lifes and the studio itself are favorite subject matters that come however second to the way they are depicted. Although a realist, representational accuracy is not my aim. The “ethos” of painting is more important than style or subject. I often associate the polymorphy in my work to my musical preferences that easily range from folk music to Verdi and from Indian tabla to medieval hymns. A large part of my work has been centered around the orthodox monastic society on Mt Athos. After all I believe that byzantine painting and certain elements of medieval art provide answers to many questions that preoccupy numerous contemporary artists.

Event: Myths, memories and mysteries : how artists respond to the past

    Dates: 17 Mar 2014 - 30 Nov 2014

Venue: Bedes World Museum- Museum of Classical Archaeology, Cambridge, Jarrow and Cambridge, UK

The exhibition, which is a collaboration between the Department of Classics at Edinburgh University and Bede's World Museum, in Jarrow on Tyneside, explores ways in which artists can engage with the past in works by a group of nine contemporary Greek artists together with a Chinese, an Australian and two English artists, who provide a broader geographical context.
    Curator, Roger Wollen
The exhibition will be shown during fall 2014 in Cambridge at the Museum of Classical Arhaeology.

    Event: 365

    Dates: 14 Nov 2013 - 13 Dec 2013

Venue: Athens Art Gallery, Athens, Greece

Works that comprise a creative project I completed during the course of a year. From May 2012 to May 2013, I painted one piece each day, to add up to the number of days in the year, 365. The only restrictions were the dimensions and the obligation to paint one piece for every day. There are no restrictions in terms of theme, technique or style. This series is not diary-style record of the events of the year, but more of a personal process of recording moods and choices that emerged during my daily work.

Event: Myths, memories and mysteries : how artists respond to the past

    Dates: 7 Nov 2013 - 31 Jan 2014

    Event: A Museum of Trees

    Dates: 13 Dec 2011 - 14 Jan 2012

Venue: Athens Art Gallery, Athens, Greece

In the exhibition “A Museum of Trees”, although the painting motive is the tree, a favorite theme of the artist, the real subject matter is art history itself. Real trees, being painted from nature, give way, in his recent work, to the trees of History. The tree, painted under different artistic movements and periods, forms the “model” for new works.

Then exhibition was also shown at the National Bank of Greece in Thessaloniki, during May 2012.

    Event: Painting on Mount Athos

    Dates: 1 Feb 2010 - 13 Mar 2010

Venue: Byzantine and Christian Museum, Athens, Greece

A retrospective exhibition about all my work related to Mount Athos and done from 1990 to 2008. Paintings, prints, book illustrations, drawings, murals.
The exhibition was previously presented at the Mount Athos Center in Thessaloniki. A coprehencive book with texts (in Greek) and all the work was published by Indiktos,Athens,2009.
