About Malika Sqalli

  • Biography
I am an artist of Austrian and Moroccan descent, between photography, mixed media and poetry.
Coming from a mixed culture background and having lived in various countries and without my family around me from an early age - the notion of home as a place, as a tribe and emotion is something that makes me feel foreign and belonging in many places and none at the same time.
Therefore the idea of home, culture, fixed or moving identity, place and Re mythologizing reality is a very fertile ground for investigation.
Home is for me this obscure concept that eludes a simple definition, a nomenclature for a plethora ideas, attachment to things, place, space and people, a house and go even further as to encompass emotion. Today, where transience is common place, home isn't as straightforward as it was for the previous generations, and so is the notion of cultural identity.

As humans we like to make sense of things, (and ourselves), link them, map them, relate to them. It's one of the processes I use in my work, along with accepting and making the images that want to come, uncensored.

We create our own reality, mythology, anything we see we comprehend pass through the filter of our mind, culture, history, and this fascinates me. It is about how the human being perceives his surroundings and decides to operate in it, or make a change. Needless to say that I see us and the world in a holistic way - we are Rock star and Star dust, moved by the moon and other conjectures.

A physical implication or boditude is very important and present in my practice. To me we don’t merely look at the world and landscape around us, we live in it, feel it , sense it, tame it. I am also a qualified personal trainer, kettle bell coach and NLP practitioner.

I was honoured to do a Tedex Talk in 2013 in Casablanca and I am fully licensed skydiver, who did tandem videos and worked on a unusual series of abstract photographs shot during freefall. Selling on Artfinder would be another level of freedom in today's global world.
