About Lesley D McKenzie
Biography
My work is inspired by so many things both natural and manmade. Often described as spiritual my paintings suggest an unfolding story or event. I use bold colours, line and form to recreate my own interpretations of the world around me. Strong shadows create depth and perspective in my work. I love the strong low sunlight of spring and autumn. I like to manipulate scale and perspective to create a sense of unease or enhance balance. My favourite part of creating a piece is deciding where the animals and flowers will be, these I use to lead the onlooker into the piece and set the theme of the story. My work shows a strong sense of design and form, this I attribut to my background training as a graphic artist.
I work in several distinctly different styles and mediums, including sculpture and I am often asked why or do I prefer one to the other. I like to think the changes in style and subject keep my work fresh and moving forward, I would hate to feel typecast by my work.
Acrylic is my painting medium of choice, I love the quick drying time and the amazing effects that can be achieved by this versatile medium.
I have my own professional framing and fine art printing studio so all my paintings are framed to the highest specification with conservation materials used with all my giclee prints.
My work features in many Scottish Galleries and in private collections internationally.
